A Day in the Life: Everyday Moments at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake
When families tour a senior living community, they often ask about the special events, the holiday parties, the outings, and the themed celebrations. And those moments matter. But at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake, some of the most meaningful parts of daily life aren’t on the marquee. They happen between breakfast and dinner, in the hallways and the living room, in a hand of dominoes after the dishes are cleared.
This is what an ordinary day looks like here. And ordinary, it turns out, is pretty extraordinary.
6:00 a.m.: The Bistro Is Open
The day at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake doesn’t ease in slowly. By six o’clock sharp, the bistro is set up and ready. Early risers have a place to land: a cup of coffee, a familiar face, the quiet comfort of a morning routine. For many residents, this is where the day begins to take shape, before the schedule even kicks in.
Morning: A Neighbor Reads the Day
Every morning, a member of the community’s Helping Hands group stops by to do something simple and profound: she reads the daily activity schedule aloud to a fellow resident who is visually impaired.
It’s a few minutes out of the morning. And it means everything.
Helping Hands is a resident-led volunteer group at Westlake, where neighbors help neighbors by choice and on their own terms. The group coordinates events, supports fellow residents with everyday needs, and helps organize community traditions like the annual Christmas gift exchange. It is, in a quiet way, one of the best examples of what a real community looks like.
Mid-Morning: Exercise, Set Up and All
Daily movement is a priority at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake, but what stands out here isn’t just that residents exercise. It’s that they set up the space beforehand and help put everything back when they’re done.
That detail matters. It reflects the Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle® in its most practical form: residents aren’t passive participants in their own day. They’re contributors. The act of arranging chairs and stacking equipment before a class is its own form of engagement, of ownership, of belonging.
Around the Clock: Meals Are Activities Too
At Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake, mealtime is never just mealtime. Before residents sit down to eat, birthday cards are passed around and signed. Residents help serve. The table becomes a gathering place, and the act of sharing a meal becomes something layered with connection and small, joyful ritual.
There’s always something happening around the edges of a meal here, and that’s entirely by design.
Afternoon: Rolling Stones and Fresh Air
Every day, the Rolling Stones Walking Club sets out. Residents enjoy the sunshine, a stroll around the building, and a good snack along the way. It’s one of those daily rhythms that sounds simple on paper and feels indispensable once it becomes part of your routine.
Fresh air, movement, and easy conversation. There’s a reason this one keeps showing up on the calendar.
Throughout the Day: Residents in the Lead
Some of the most active hours at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake belong entirely to the residents themselves.
Robbie leads the Audiobook Club in assisted living, gathering her neighbors around a shared story. Doug hosts the Daily Chronicle in Memory Care, keeping residents connected to current events and conversation. Vern runs Sports Talk, also in Memory Care, where the discussion and the camaraderie flow freely. And every Monday, Rosary and Communion brings residents together in faith and quiet reflection.
Several assisted living residents also volunteer their time in Memory Care, leading and participating in programming across both neighborhoods. The lines between the two don’t really exist here. It’s one community, showing up for each other.
Late Afternoon: Balloon Volleyball
Both neighborhoods come together for Balloon Volleyball, one of the community’s favorite shared activities. The rules are simple. The energy is anything but. As Betty, Westlake’s Life Enrichment Director, puts it: they only count points when they’re winning, which means the scorekeeping is flexible, and the laughter is not.
After Dinner: Dominoes
The evening winds down, but it doesn’t wind out. After dinner, a resident takes the lead on Dominoes, pulling out the tiles, gathering the players, and running the game. It’s a small act of leadership at the end of a full day, and it captures something essential about life at Westlake: there’s always a role to play, and someone ready to fill it.
What a Day Like This Really Means
Big events are wonderful. But it’s the accumulation of ordinary moments, the early coffee, the neighbor who reads the schedule aloud, the walk in the sun, the post-dinner domino game, that shapes what daily life actually feels like.
At Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake, every hour of the day holds something. Not because the calendar demands it, but because the residents here have made it that way.
Come see a day in the life for yourself. Schedule a tour and stay a while. You’ll want to.
