What Sets Clayton’s Memory Care Program Apart

Enrichment With Meaning

We believe in interactive engagement for the elderly. That’s why we offer:

  • Life stations and sensory areas for reminiscence therapy
  • Hands-on art, music, and gardening programs
  • Montessori-based daily activities that encourage cognitive function and fine motor skills
  • Personalized enrichment based on the individual’s interests, history, and strengths

Everything is designed to restore confidence, promote connection, and nurture joy.

Life Stations

Life stations and sensory areas for reminiscence therapy are thoughtfully designed spaces within the community that help spark memories, encourage storytelling, and foster emotional connection. These areas might include familiar setups like a vintage kitchen, baby nursery, garden workbench, or office space, complete with props and sensory elements to recreate meaningful environments from the past. By engaging touch, smell, and sight, these stations promote cognitive stimulation, reduce anxiety, and offer residents a comforting sense of purpose and familiarity.

Hands-On Activities

Hands-on art, music, and gardening programs offer residents meaningful opportunities to express themselves, connect with others, and find calm through creativity. Whether it’s painting a seasonal canvas, strumming along to a familiar tune, or tending herbs in raised garden beds, these activities stimulate cognitive function and promote sensory engagement. Each program is adapted to meet varying abilities, making it easy for residents to participate at their own comfort level while fostering pride, relaxation, and joy.

Cognitive and Fine Motor Refinement

Montessori-based daily activities are carefully designed to stimulate memory, attention, and problem-solving while promoting confidence and autonomy. From sorting tasks and tactile puzzles to threading beads and matching exercises, these activities are tailored to strengthen fine motor skills and maintain cognitive function in a purposeful, engaging way. By incorporating familiar, age-appropriate tasks into residents’ routines, these exercises help create moments of success and connection, supporting both emotional well-being and neurological health.

Personalized Enrichment

Each resident receives a thoughtfully crafted enrichment plan tailored to their unique life story, personal preferences, and preserved abilities. Whether it’s revisiting a former hobby like painting, engaging in music from their youth, or caring for plants in a memory garden, these personalized activities create meaningful engagement and spark joy. This individualized approach not only nurtures identity and dignity but also fosters connection, purpose, and cognitive stimulation through familiar routines and favorite pastimes.

Helping a loved one with memory loss is never easy. At Fairmont, we’re here to shoulder the burden with you. Families choose our senior dementia care program not only for our expertise but because we treat your loved one like our own—with compassion, patience, and heart.

Hear From Our Residents’ Loved Ones

“Our mom spent the last 3 ½ years of her life in memory care at Fairmont. From the first day we walked in and were greeted by Theresia, the director, we knew this was the right choice. Fairmont felt warm and homey. The caregivers are not only highly trained in dementia care, but they also showed remarkable patience, empathy & respect for each of the residents. There was always a fun and thoughtful activity or excursion to keep the residents engaged.

We felt great trust in the nursing team and all the care givers. They kept us apprised of any changes, needs or concerns. Communication was outstanding. One of the most unexpected and beautiful aspects of our experience was how the staff became like family. They didn’t just care for our mom -they knew her stories, showered her with love and treated her with dignity every single day. Their warmth wasn’t just professional courtesy; it was deeply human.

Our family members visited several times a week, helped chaperone excursions and were very involved, thus firsthand knowledge of this special place and the staff. Thank you, Fairmont team -nurses, med techs, activity directors, care givers, concierges & all the others who make up the village. We are truly grateful.”

“I can’t say enough great things about the staff at the Fairmont in Clayton. My dad came in with a feeding tube, and in a wheelchair, needing a lot of help. The head caregiver and caregivers, as well as the dining room staff, with a lot of patience and care, were able to get him back to eating whole food again, after a small medical procedure. And the food there is great!

The head caregiver and head nurse gave me their cell numbers to text or call, and were always available day or night. I never worried about Dad being at the Fairmont, I knew he was always in great hands! Sadly, dad was only able to stay there for six months, due to his cancer. But they loved on him until his dying day. I would highly recommend the Fairmont for anyone looking for the best assisted living in St. Louis!”

“My mother, Mildred Schermer, thoroughly enjoyed her stay at the Fairmont. She had no complaints and the staff was wonderful. The facility was always kept very clean and the food was very good. And, as an added bonus, everyone including me, her daughter, enjoyed Bob the labradoodle. He could made anyone smile! Activities were great even though my mom didn’t participate too much. All in all, I would highly recommend this facility to anyone looking for a place for their loved one.”

“We looked at about eight facilities in West St. Louis County, near our home. We chose the Fairmont and I was glad we did. My wife was in the Memory Care unit among experienced and loving staff who cared for her well. In the last months of her life, I moved in with her when a suitable space became available. I liked the food, loved the staff, and still visit them from time to time. The only reason I moved to an independent living facility west of St. Louis was to live close to one of our children. But for that, I’d still be at the Fairmont.”

FAQs About Our Memory Care Services

Our memory care program offers a variety of enriching activities designed to stimulate cognitive function, promote sensory engagement, and create moments of joy. Residents can participate in art projects, music sessions, gardening, movement-based activities, and life stations that encourage reminiscence. These experiences are tailored to individual interests and strengths, helping to maintain dignity and encourage a sense of purpose.

All team members in our memory care neighborhood receive specialized training in dementia care, including instruction in the Montessori approach for aging and dementia. Staff are equipped to support residents through every stage of cognitive decline and are trained to provide compassionate, respectful care. Ongoing education ensures the team stays current with best practices and approaches to support emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being.

Transitioning a loved one into memory care is an emotional experience, and we strive to make it as smooth as possible. Our team works closely with families to learn about each resident’s life story, preferences, and needs so we can personalize care from day one. We provide guidance, regular updates, and emotional support, ensuring families feel confident and connected throughout the process.

We understand that memory care needs are not static. Each resident’s care plan is reviewed routinely and adjusted as needed to reflect evolving physical or cognitive needs. Because our community is licensed for intermediate care, we can accommodate increased support, allowing residents to age in place comfortably while receiving the right level of assistance at every stage.
