At Fairmont Senior Living of Washington Township, December was a month brimming with warmth, gratitude, and intergenerational connection. Residents, families, and staff embraced the holiday spirit through engaging programs, creative activities, and community outreach that embodied the heart of the Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle®.
A Festive Holiday Meal With Loved Ones
One of the highlights of the month was our annual holiday meal, where residents and their families gathered to celebrate the season. The community transformed into a cozy, festive space with twinkling lights, colorful decorations, and the smell of holiday favorites drifting through the halls.
Families shared laughter and stories over traditional dishes, while Santa Claus made his rounds, bringing smiles and cheer to all ages. For many residents, this event rekindled cherished memories of family gatherings and offered a beautiful opportunity to celebrate togetherness in the present moment. It wasn’t just a meal—it was a reminder of the deep bonds that make the holidays meaningful.
Riding the Polar Express to Light Up Middletown
Before winter weather became too harsh, residents bundled up and boarded our very own Polar Express for a special outing to Light Up Middletown. This beloved local event features dazzling displays of lights and holiday scenes that delight visitors of all ages.
Residents were enchanted by the spectacle, many reminiscing about childhood traditions and favorite seasonal memories. Outings like these are more than entertainment—they connect residents to their wider community, offering sensory stimulation and joy through shared experience. Laughter echoed through the bus as residents marveled at displays and sang along to carols on the way home.
The Christmas Story in Memory Care
In a touching display of preparation and pride, residents in our Memory Care neighborhood spent the month rehearsing a reading of the Christmas Story for their families and friends. With guidance from staff, residents practiced lines, chose carols, and assembled handmade song packets for the audience.
The final performance brought tears and applause as residents read aloud with confidence and joy. Their voices, accompanied by favorite Christmas carols, filled the space with warmth and nostalgia. Activities like this are at the heart of Montessori-based care, empowering residents to engage in purposeful roles and connect meaningfully with others.
A Tradition of Intergenerational Performances
Fairmont was honored to welcome talented performers from Pure Studios Performing Arts and Kay’s School of Dance. These intergenerational performances are a treasured tradition in our community, as young dancers bring energy, innocence, and awe to residents who often recall their own children and grandchildren at similar ages.
This year’s performance by Kay’s School of Dance held a particularly nostalgic note. Many of the current dancers are second-generation performers—their mothers once danced for our residents two decades ago. This unique connection across generations underscores the lasting impact of community relationships and shared traditions.

Decking the Halls, Together
In true Montessori spirit, our residents were instrumental in decorating the community for the holidays. From choosing where each ornament would hang to helping arrange centerpieces and stringing garland, residents found joy and pride in transforming their home.
While sipping hot chocolate, sampling cookies, and listening to classic Christmas music, residents laughed and shared memories about holiday decorating in years past. These small but meaningful rituals remind everyone, staff, residents, and families alike, that creating joy can be as simple as working together with purpose and heart.
The Adopt-a-Resident Holiday Initiative
One of the most meaningful traditions at Fairmont Washington Township is our Adopt-a-Resident holiday program. Leading up to Christmas, families, team members, and volunteers from the broader community stepped forward to ensure every resident received a personalized gift.
Thanks to their generosity, each resident received a thoughtful present, from cozy winter clothing to sensory tools, toiletries, and meaningful keepsakes. The excitement on Christmas morning was palpable, with residents unwrapping gifts and sharing smiles with one another. This initiative not only brings holiday cheer, but it reinforces the powerful message that every resident is known, seen, and celebrated.
A Season of Togetherness and Purpose
From holiday meals and intergenerational performances to personal reflection and festive outings, December at Fairmont Senior Living of Washington Township was filled with love, laughter, and meaning. These events reflect the values that shape our community year-round: dignity, engagement, and a sense of belonging for every resident.
At Fairmont, we don’t just celebrate the season—we create spaces where seniors can lead vibrant, connected lives filled with purpose. Schedule a tour today and experience the warmth, connection, and care that define our Washington Township community.
