Not Just Arts and Crafts: How Creative Designs Brings Our Community Together

A few times a week at Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills, our residents pull up chairs around a table, pick up their supplies, and get to work. What they make changes with the season. What happens around the table stays the same.

It might only take 30 minutes to finish a project. But residents often stay for hours.

What Gets Made at Creative Designs

Creative Designs is one of the most beloved senior living activities at Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills, and the range of projects keeps things fresh no matter the time of year. Our residents have made mosaic picture frames and trinket boxes, beaded bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and keychains. They have made floral frames to welcome spring and sun visors for warmer days. Around the holidays, they crafted table centerpieces for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. For Mother’s Day and Kentucky Derby Day, they made fascinators.

Some of those projects now sit on shelves and windowsills in residents’ apartments. Others decorate the common spaces they share. Every finished piece is a small reminder that something good happened here.

The Day the Bird Feeders Took Over the Afternoon

A few months ago, our residents gathered after lunch to make homemade bird feeders out of cheerios, grapes, and blueberries. On paper, it was a 30-minute activity.

Two hours later, no one had left.

Residents sat together through all of early afternoon, working with their hands, listening to music, humming and singing along. The conversation flowed the way it does when people are comfortable and unhurried. When the feeders were finally finished, the group went outside together to walk the campus and find the right spots to hang them.

That walk, that choosing of spots, that shared satisfaction of seeing something they made find its place in the world around them — that was not in the activity description. It happened because our residents were together, and together is where good things tend to unfold.

More Than a Craft Project

These sessions are not just assisted living activities to fill an afternoon. They are opportunities for connection. Opportunities to use fine motor skills in ways that feel purposeful. Opportunities to express something personal. Opportunities to contribute to the look and feel of the community our residents call home.

The music playing in the background is not incidental. It is the thing that gets people humming. Humming turns into singing. Singing turns into a conversation about where they first heard that song. That conversation is the real project.

For residents in our memory care neighborhood at Farmington Hills, Creative Designs offers something especially meaningful. Activities for seniors with dementia that engage the hands, invite familiar music, and create a calm and structured social setting are among the most effective ways to support well-being. Our team approaches every session with that understanding, guided by the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle that shapes care across our community. Every project is an opportunity to connect a resident to their strengths, their creativity, and the people sitting alongside them.

If you would like to see what daily life looks like at Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills, we would love to have you in for a visit.

The Hours That Happen After the Project Is Done

What makes Creative Designs stand out among the senior living activities at Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills is not what gets made. It is what keeps people at the table long after the last bead is strung or the last centerpiece is finished.

It is the music. The laughter. The easy conversation between neighbors who have become friends. The small pride of carrying something you made back to your apartment and setting it somewhere you will see it every day.

That is what we are really making here. And it never takes just 30 minutes.

Come See What Is Happening at the Table

Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills offers assisted living and memory care built around the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle, a credential earned through the Center for Applied Research in Dementia that reflects a genuine, measurable standard of resident-centered care. Creative Designs is one of the ways that standard shows up every single week. We would love to show you more. Schedule a tour and stay for a while. You might just get to watch something being made.
