Every March, the senior living industry recognizes Careers in Aging Month, an opportunity to shine a light on the dedicated professionals who choose to spend their working lives in service to older adults. It’s a field that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. But at Fairmont Senior Living, we know something that anyone who’s spent time in our communities quickly discovers: the people who work here aren’t just doing a job. They’re building something that lasts.

We celebrated five team members across our communities who represent something remarkable in an industry often associated with high turnover, people who’ve found a home at Fairmont and stayed, not because they had to, but because they wanted to.

Senior living offers an extraordinary range of career paths that many people never consider. Servers, cooks, concierge staff, life enrichment coordinators, housekeepers, environmental services professionals, nursing assistants, nurses, business office staff, and leadership roles in resident care—the opportunities are diverse, the work is meaningful, and the potential for growth is real.

What draws people to this field and keeps them here is something that’s hard to put into words until you’ve experienced it. It’s the relationship you build with a resident who lights up when you walk in. It’s the family member who trusts you with someone they love. Charity Paynter: 22 Years of Compassion and Leadership

Fairmont Senior Living of Washington Township

Charity Paynter’s career at Fairmont Senior Living of Washington Township began over two decades ago, when she joined the team as a Care Manager. In the years that followed, she advanced through roles as Lead and Reminiscence Coordinator before stepping into her current position as Resident Care Director—a journey that reflects both her dedication and Fairmont’s commitment to growing talent from within.

Charity is also a Credentialed Internal Trainer for the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle, a distinction that speaks to her depth of expertise in memory care and her investment in helping others do this work well.

What keeps her here? It’s simple. “I love working with the elderly,” Charity shares. “I admire their wisdom and their life experiences.” She’s especially drawn to memory care, and she carries with her a belief that shapes every day she comes to work: that every day is a new day, full of opportunities to connect, to support, and to make a meaningful difference.

Outside of Fairmont, Charity is a proud mother to Bridget, Ashley, and Kaine, and a grandmother to Cove and Acacia, who bring her great joy.

Twenty-two years in, her passion hasn’t dimmed. It’s grown.

Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake

Kay Brown started at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake as a care manager, providing direct care to residents day in and day out. For 19 of her 22 years at the community, that’s exactly what she did—built relationships, supported residents through their daily lives, and showed up with consistency and warmth.

Today, Kay serves as Life Enrichment Coordinator in Memory Care, and like Charity, she’s a Credentialed Internal Trainer for the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle.

In her own words: “I love working in senior living because it allows me to make meaningful connections with residents and brighten their day. It gives me the chance to bring comfort, joy, and companionship to residents. I enjoy building relationships and learning from their lives.”

That description, comfort, joy, companionship, says everything about why Kay has stayed. She’s not here for the routine. She’s here for the people.

Derrick Crawford: 21 Years of Steadfast Service

In an industry that too often sees team members come and go, Derrick’s tenure is a quiet testament to something important: that when a workplace genuinely values its people, its people stay.

Derrick’s longevity speaks for itself, and his presence in the community is felt by the residents and colleagues who’ve been lucky enough to work alongside him.

Gale Thompson: 16 Years of Elevating Dignity

Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills

Gale Thompson came to Fairmont Senior Living of Farmington Hills 16 years ago as a concierge. She directed visitors, answered phones, and supported residents and staff with grace and professionalism, the kind of steady, warm presence that sets the tone for an entire community.

Over time, Gale’s path led her to a new role: Life Enrichment Coordinator. In this position, she helps residents pursue their interests, find meaningful engagement, and connect with their peers. She creates moments of joy. She makes memories. And she does it all with something that defines her approach to every interaction: a deep commitment to elevating the dignity of each individual and fostering their independence.

“The role has taught me to appreciate all that life has to offer,” Gale reflects.

She’s also a Credentialed Internal Trainer in the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle, and in her personal time, she enjoys her grandchildren and softball.

Gale started at the front desk and grew into one of her community’s most beloved team members. That’s what a career at Fairmont can look like.

Fairmont Senior Living of Northville

Danielle Dennard has been a housekeeper at Fairmont Senior Living of Northville since 2003. That’s over 25 years of showing up, doing the work, and caring for the residents in her own quiet, essential way.

“Hi, I’m Danielle, but everyone calls me Danny,” she says. “I’ve worked at Fairmont Senior Living of Northville since 2003. I love working with the seniors here and they all tell me they love me as well. I enjoy what I do as a housekeeper and helping all the residents. I love keeping the residents’ rooms clean and tidy and the building clean as well.”

Housekeepers are the unspoken heroes of senior living communities. They work in the background, often in ways that go unnoticed until something is less than right. To do that work for over two decades, in the same community, with the same warmth and dedication Danny brings every day, is extraordinary.

Her pride in the community is evident. Her affection for the residents is clear. And her 25 years of service speaks to something that no job description can fully capture: she cares about this place and the people in it, and they care about her right back.

Charity, Kay, Derrick, Gale, and Danny all came to Fairmont differently. They work in different roles, at different communities, with different backgrounds and paths. But they share something essential.
