Moments: A Day in the Life at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton

There are the days that make the highlight reel: the spring open house dance parties, the themed celebrations, the events that fill a photo album. And then there are the ordinary days. The Monday flower vases. The Wednesday Elvis impersonator. The resident who loved making jewelry so much the team found a way to squeeze in one more session before the month was out. At Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton, it’s those ordinary days that tell the real story.

The Day Starts Moving

Most mornings at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton begin with residents choosing their own exercise program. Walking groups, stretching, gentle movement at whatever level suits the day, the options are varied, and so are the people who show up for them.

Every other week, a volunteer arrives to lead a Music Drumming Class, an addition to the programming that came directly from a resident who knew someone who could bring it. The drums carry rhythm and movement and something harder to replicate in most settings: music you make with your own hands, alongside people you see every day. The class is one part physical activity, two parts community.

When Baking Becomes Connection

Mid-morning, the Baking Club gathers. Recent sessions have produced Hasselback biscuit bites, dirt cups, graham cracker sandwiches, and frosting cookies, and the specific recipe matters less than what happens around the making of it. Residents who spent decades cooking for families find themselves back in that rhythm. Those who never spent much time in a kitchen discover they have a knack for it. Either way, the Baking Club is Montessori in action: connecting residents to skills, roles, and genuine contribution rather than just giving them something to fill an hour.

What Mondays Are Made For

Every Monday afternoon, a small group of residents gathers for Flower Arranging. The flowers come from Trader Joe’s, donated each week, and what gets made from them ends up in vases throughout the building and in resident rooms. This is a resident-led activity from start to finish. Residents sort the stems, decide what goes where, and produce something the whole community lives alongside all week. By Thursday, someone always notices which arrangements are still holding.

Happy Hours, Elvis, and One More Jewelry Session

Wednesday afternoons at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton are reliably something worth looking forward to. The Happy Hour format rotates between live entertainment and crafting, and the entertainment has ranged from an Elvis impersonator to a Willie Nelson impersonator, both of whom have inspired the kind of singalong energy that follows people right into dinner.

When the afternoon turns to art projects, the direction follows resident interest. One resident loved making jewelry so much that after the month’s session wrapped, the team simply scheduled another one before the next cycle came around. That kind of small decision says more about a community than any programming calendar could.

The Quieter Hours

Some of the best moments at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton don’t belong to any scheduled activity. On a beautiful afternoon, residents find their way to the front porch to sit, take in the fresh air, and watch the world go by. No agenda. Just the particular pleasure of being outside and unhurried.

Later in the day, card games, board games, and social games draw people together around tables in the way they have for most of their lives. The games change. The faces around the table stay mostly the same, and that consistency turns out to be its own form of community.

Roots in the Garden

In the afternoon, residents head outside to tend the garden. Tomatoes, peppers, and flowers all need attention: weeding, watering, and the kind of hands-on care that connects people to growing things in a way that a walk or a class simply can’t replicate. Residents take ownership of this work in the full sense of the phrase. They show up, they contribute, and the garden reflects what they’ve put into it. It’s the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® expressed not as a program but as a daily practice.

Part of the Larger St. Louis Story

Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton isn’t separate from St. Louis. It’s part of the city, and the residents here know it.

When Clayton co-hosted the “Shred Alzheimer’s” event in partnership with a local company, residents weren’t on the sidelines. They helped assemble the giveaway bags in advance and then stood at the drop-off station on event day to personally hand bags to everyone who came. That combination of behind-the-scenes preparation and front-facing participation is exactly the kind of contribution that makes a day feel like it mattered.

Then there are the outings. Residents shop for personal items they want and need. They’ve taken a tour of the Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Factory and stayed for the cafe. They’ve walked the Missouri Botanical Gardens. And getting to a Cardinals game is always somewhere on the list.

Come See for Yourself

A day at Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton is built from moments like these: a vase assembled on a Monday, a drum circle every other week, a resident who got her jewelry session back because it meant something to her. If you’d like to see what life here actually looks like, we’d love to have you visit.
