Moving With Joy: How Fairmont on Clayton Inspires Active Living Every Day

At Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton, movement is more than a wellness goal—it’s a celebration of self-expression, purpose, and joy. True to our Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle®, we believe exercise should be accessible, empowering, and, above all, fun. That’s why our community offers a wide variety of movement-based programs that meet our residents where they are, while encouraging them to stay active in ways that resonate deeply.

From carefree dance sessions to rhythm-filled drumming classes, every program we offer is designed to nurture physical health, emotional wellness, and community connection.

Dork Dancing: Movement Without Judgment

If you step into our activity room during a Dork Dancing session, you’ll find a joyful, packed space full of movement, music, and laughter. This freeform, sober dance movement is led by Ethan, who brings his passion for mental wellness and inclusion into every session. Residents are encouraged to dance like no one is watching—there’s no routine to memorize, just movement that feels good.

The philosophy behind Dork Dancing is simple: when we let go of self-consciousness, we free ourselves to feel joy. Ethan reminds us that perfection isn’t the goal; participation is. His visits have quickly become a resident favorite, with the room often “busting at the seams” with residents eager to move, smile, and express themselves.

Vitality in Motion: Structured Dance for Strength and Fun

For those who enjoy a more guided approach, our partnership with Vitality in Motion brings professional dance instructors into the community. These classes follow a structured format, teaching residents specific routines that help build coordination, memory, and confidence.

Residents learn and rehearse choreography at their own pace, gaining a sense of accomplishment and rhythm along the way. More than just physical exercise, these sessions offer cognitive stimulation and a beautiful opportunity for group unity through synchronized movement.

Music Drumming Classes: Feel the Beat, Move the Body

Twice a month, our music drumming program fills the activity room with rhythm, laughter, and energy. Residents use large exercise balls and drumsticks to follow guided beats that blend movement and music in a fun, therapeutic way. The experience is upbeat, engaging, and accessible to residents of varying physical abilities.

The program is led by a dedicated volunteer who brings a strong background as a former activities director. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and the residents often share how empowered and refreshed they feel after class. For many, the most enjoyable part is the simple act of striking the drums, releasing energy and emotions in a safe, joyful setting. This program has become a favorite among residents who appreciate both the physical benefits and the emotional lift it provides.
