Seniors Honor Local Heroes During 9/11 Week

Every September, Fairmont Senior Living on Clayton celebrates National Assisted Living Week—a time to recognize the vibrant lives of residents and the supportive teams who care for them. This year, that celebration took on a deeper meaning as it coincided with the anniversary of September 11th, a date etched into the hearts of Americans everywhere.

Inspired by the week’s theme of intergenerational connection and purpose-driven living, they organized a heartfelt community outreach event to honor the real-life heroes who serve them daily: their local first responders.

A Visit to Richmond Heights Fire Department

On September 12, a group of residents visited the Richmond Heights Fire Department for a very special gathering. It wasn’t just a symbolic visit—it was a full-blown celebration. Residents worked alongside staff to plan every detail, starting with selecting a classic, all-American menu of burgers, hotdogs, chips, drinks, and dessert.

The event truly reflected the Montessori-inspired lifestyle Fairmont promotes, where residents are active participants in the rhythm of community life. From helping set up tables to serving meals and chatting with local firefighters, residents embraced meaningful roles that brought both joy and purpose.

Cooking for a Cause: Gratitude on the Grill

Tim, Fairmont’s Maintenance Director, and Rich, their Marketing Director, manned the grill while the residents hosted several dozen firefighters, police officers, and public works staff. Together, they shared laughs, swapped stories, and bonded over the spirit of service.

For the residents, many of whom remember exactly where they were on 9/11, this act of giving back provided a tangible way to show appreciation and preserve the day’s importance for future generations. It was also an opportunity to build intergenerational bridges, connect with their wider community, and demonstrate the power of purposeful aging.
