Westlake Helping Hands

Every morning, one of our residents at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake sits down beside her neighbor and reads the daily activity calendar aloud. Her neighbor is visually impaired. She wants her friend to know exactly what the day holds and what to look forward to. Nobody assigned her that role. She noticed a need and showed up.

That is the Helping Hands committee.

The Helping Hands committee has been part of life at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake for several years. It is a resident-driven volunteer group where neighbors help neighbors with daily tasks, social moments, and community activities, with no administration required and no external coordination. Our residents recognize what their peers need and step in to fill those gaps, and the community that grows from that kind of care is something that cannot be programmed or scheduled. It simply lives here, in the people who live here.

A Montessori Gold Project Built by the People Who Live Here

When Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake earned its Gold Credential in Montessori Inspired Lifestyle®, the Helping Hands committee was our Gold Project. To earn that recognition, a community must demonstrate core Montessori principles woven into real, daily practice: moving from simple to more complex, inviting participation rather than directing it, offering cues and support that preserve independence, and keeping the focus on engagement above all else.

Helping Hands does all of that, without being engineered to do it. Residents identify a role that fits their abilities, step into it on their own terms, and keep showing up. Quieter residents can be leaders here too. The committee creates space for every kind of leadership because contribution looks different for every person, and all of it matters. What binds the committee together is not a shared skill set. It is a shared belief that the person next to you deserves your attention.

Neighbors Looking Out for Neighbors

The day-to-day work of Helping Hands is made up of dozens of small, deeply personal moments.

Doug walks over to Memory Care each day to read the Daily Chronicles to a small group of residents. Vern leads Sports Talk for fellow men who share his love of the game. One of our residents plays piano for Memory Care neighbors, bringing music into rooms that need it most. Robbie helps residents work through tech questions and device trouble, sitting with them patiently until the problem is solved. Ben sits with residents who are having a hard day and sings with them, one on one, until the day turns.

These are not formal programs. They are neighbors taking care of neighbors.

The committee also steps in quietly during group activities and daily programs. When a resident could use a little extra guidance to join a game of Bingo, Wii Bowling, or 21, a Helping Hands member joins in alongside them and helps them find their footing. The goal is always engagement and dignity, together, without drawing attention to the support itself.

When new residents arrive at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake, the Helping Hands crew gives them a personal tour of the building. Learning the layout, meeting familiar faces, understanding where things are and how the days flow: that kind of welcome does what no printed guide can. It says: you belong here, and we will show you around.

Giving Back Beyond Our Walls

The spirit of Helping Hands does not stop at our front door.

At Christmastime, the committee organized The Giving Tree, coordinating carefully to make sure every resident at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake received a gift during the holiday season. A fall food drive is currently in the planning stages, with the goal of supporting neighbors in the greater Westlake community who face food insecurity.

The committee has also organized a supply drive for Laura’s House, a local women’s shelter, pulling together donations from across the community. Residents came together to make snuffle mats for a local animal shelter, a project that brought genuine joy to the people who made them and to the animals who received them.

Caring for people outside our walls comes from the same instinct that drives everything inside them. Our residents look outward because looking outward is simply part of who they are.

The Kind of Community That Grows from the Inside

What makes Helping Hands worth talking about is not the activities themselves. It is where they come from.

This committee was not designed by an administration or launched as a formal initiative. It grew from the residents. It is sustained by those same residents, year after year, without fanfare. And it reflects something real and unhurried about the culture at Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake’s assisted living community, something that visitors tend to notice before they can put words to it.

The Montessori Inspired Lifestyle holds that people flourish when they are given meaningful roles, invited to contribute on their own terms, and respected for what they bring. Helping Hands is that belief in daily action. These little acts are simply baked into our culture. They are a part of who we are, and they occur organically, without anyone needing to announce them.
