Spooky Fun and Sweet Memories: Westlake’s Indoor Trunk or Treat Was a Hit

When spooky weather threatened outdoor festivities, the Fairmont Senior Living of Westlake community didn’t let it dampen their Halloween spirit. Instead, they brought the celebration indoors and created one of the most memorable Trunk or Treat events yet.

Residents, staff, families, and local trick-or-treaters all gathered on the first floor for an afternoon filled with candy, costumes, laughter, and meaningful moments that warmed everyone’s hearts.

A Community Effort from Start to Finish

This year’s Trunk or Treat was a team effort in the truest sense. Candy was donated by staff, families, hospice partners, and even the residents themselves. Resident crafter Ben made a custom donation station that quickly filled with goodies for the big day.

Residents played a big role in the planning process. They helped choose the date and time, collaborated on flyer designs, and joined in on decorating both ahead of the event and on Halloween itself. The private dining room in Memory Care was transformed into a safe trick-or-treating zone, while decorated doors along the hallway welcomed young visitors with spooky charm.

Halloween

Costumes and Creativity at Every Turn

Halloween isn’t complete without costumes, and Westlake delivered! Several residents dressed up in spirited fashion. Robbie became a witch, Macia transformed into a pumpkin, Eloise charmed everyone as her namesake doll, Millie went feline as a cat, Dan brought laughter as a clown, and Rabha made a bold pirate. The Care Bear crew included Vern, Doug, Joanne, and Ben, with some staff joining in the fun too.

Visiting kids arrived in a delightful variety of costumes, including skeletons, witches, superheroes like Spiderman and Captain America, a Minecraft character, a monkey, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, and more. The blend of generations sharing smiles, laughter, and candy made the afternoon unforgettable.

Punch, Pumpkins, and Purpose

To keep the energy up, everyone enjoyed a special Halloween-themed “Hocus Pocus Punch,” which was a hit among guests of all ages. Around 60 people came through with nearly 40 excited trick-or-treaters, making for a lively and joy-filled event.

The indoor setting proved so successful that residents and staff began talking about keeping it that way for next year. Decorating doors and rooms on the first floor created a warm, welcoming atmosphere that was both safe and festive, ideal for residents and visiting families alike.

Intergenerational Joy and Lasting Impact

One of the most cherished parts of the event was the way it brought generations together. Residents loved seeing their grandkids proudly dressed up and showing them off to their friends. They also got to meet the children of staff members, making the community feel more like one big family.

A resident shared, “What I love most is seeing the same kids year after year, watching them grow, remembering their costumes. It’s not just trick-or-treating. It’s tradition.”

Events like these are more than seasonal celebrations—they’re an extension of the community values at Fairmont Senior Living. Residents had purpose throughout the entire process, from planning and decorating to hosting and clean-up. It was a beautiful example of how holidays can foster meaningful connection and joy, no matter your age.
