Out and About: How Fairmont Senior Living of Northville Spent the Summer

Summer at Fairmont Senior Living of Northville looked a lot like this: cool slushies at Guernsey Dairy Farm, a cruise along the Detroit River, and a community that never stopped moving.

There is something that happens when a group of people gets out together. A scoop of Dairy Queen tastes better when someone across the picnic table is already laughing. A morning at the Detroit Zoo feels lighter when you are watching a neighbor’s face light up at the giraffes. Those shared moments are hard to manufacture and easy to feel, and our residents at Fairmont Senior Living of Northville have been collecting them all summer.

Why Getting Out Is Part of the Plan

Community outings are not scheduled extras. They are a core part of how life enrichment programming works at Fairmont Senior Living of Northville. Staying connected to the broader community protects against social isolation, which research consistently links to serious declines in both mental and physical well-being for older adults. The approach is not complicated: keep people moving, keep people engaged, and keep the world from getting smaller.

Physical mobility matters just as much. Walking trails at Kensington Metro Park, boarding a boat on the Detroit River, navigating a round of putt-putt golf, and exploring the Detroit Zoo all require movement, attention, and engagement. These outings support strength, coordination, and the everyday confidence that comes from living a full life. That same spirit drives the active living programming our team builds into each season, indoors and out.

A Summer Worth Remembering

The season started with slushies at Guernsey Dairy Farm and has not slowed down since. Residents visited the Detroit Zoo, took a cruise on the Diamond Jack Boat Tour, hit the links at putt-putt golf, and paddled through Kensington Metro Park on a boat ride. Lunch outings to Burger Bar and Wintergarden Tavern offered a chance to share a meal somewhere new, while stops at Dairy Queen and One Under Craft Beer gave everyone something to look forward to on a warm afternoon. Quieter moments found their place, too, with a lunch picnic outdoors, an afternoon at Rotary Park, and worship at St. Kenneth’s Church.

Not every outing needs to be a production. Some of the best afternoons are simply the ones where everyone ends up somewhere together, somewhere outside the usual routine, somewhere that reminds you there is still plenty of world to see.
